Students attending this year’s academic track of our MAS in Transitional Justice, Human Rights and the Rule of Law developed research proposals on a variety of transitional justice issues, often addressing new approaches and under-explored perspectives.

Mpho Somhlaba is a South African Diplomat responsible for humanitarian issues at the Permanent Mission of South Africa to the UN in Geneva and is currently enrolled in our Executive Master in International Law in Armed Conflict.

During one day, more than 100 experts, practitioners, academics, diplomats and representatives of NGOs, international organizations and National Human Rights Institutions discussed and debated the connectivity of human rights mechanisms.

The Geneva Academy team – Anna Lochhead-Sperling and Paula Padrino Vilela who are currently enrolled in our LLM in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights – successfully qualified for the oral rounds in the Nelson Mandela moot court.

Experts discussed the detention and judgment of ISIS members, including foreign fighters and their families, in North-East Syria.

Our new publication addresses the handling of individual communications, tackles efficiency questions related to this procedure and outlines a series of key recommendations to improve the system, including the creation of a registry to provide substantive legal support to United Nations treaty bodies.

During one week, academics from China, Cuba, Indonesia, Iran Malaysia and Viet Nam deepened their knowledge and expertise of United Nations human rights mechanisms during a customized training course co-organized with the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights of the University of Oslo.

During three days, students of our Master of Advanced Studies in Transitional Justice, Human Rights and the Rule of Law immersed, via a practical exercise and in the context of the 2019 Spring School, in the design and establishment of a truth commission to address past human rights abuses.

Our new publication The Right to Seeds in Europe focuses on the steps that the European Union (EU) and EU member states shall take, via the implementation of the UN Declaration, to better protect this right in Europe.
