A strong theoretical and practical knowledge of the applicable international legal framework is essential for working on contemporary challenges related to armed conflict and other situations of violence, peace negotiations, human rights protection, or transitions from violent conflict or oppressive rule. Operating in such complex environments requires a solid understanding of the content and structure of the law, as well as its limits.
By providing the necessary tools to apply the international legal framework to these challenges, our master's programmes form specialists in the fields of international humanitarian law (IHL), international human rights law, international criminal law and transitional justice.
Our students can benefit from in-house career advice and counselling provided by our Coordinator of Professionalizing Activities. They have also access to the Graduate Institute’s career services – notably the career workshops and individual CV check and interview preparation meetings.
Our LLM and MTJ students can extend their residence permit for up to six months following the completion of their programme (July to December) to undertake an internship or temporary assignment related to their studies in a Geneva-based organization, and/or look for a job in Geneva or Switzerland.
During the year, our students benefit from the Career Services of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.
Our LLM students acquire first-hand professional experience via internships with Geneva-based humanitarian and human rights actors
The Master in Transitional Justice combines high-level academic education with real-world practice, allowing students to develop the transferable skills necessary to succeed in the professional world.
Our LLM students can participate in two moot courts, the prestigious Jean-Pictet Competition on international humanitarian law and the Nuremberg Moot Court Competition.
