The Geneva Academy’s Integrated Hub for Human Rights Research, Expertise, Policy Engagement and Training

The Geneva Human Rights Platform (GHRP) is the Geneva Academy’s integrated hub for research, expertise, policy engagement and training on contemporary human rights challenges.

Building on the Geneva Academy’s long-standing engagement in the field of international human rights law and policy, the Platform brings together research initiatives, expert dialogue, conferences, policy discussions, and training activities aimed at fostering informed engagement between academia, policymakers, practitioners, international organisations, civil society actors and affected communities.

As part of the Geneva Academy’s broader research and policy engagement activities, the Platform contributes to the promotion and effective implementation of international human rights law, particularly in situations of crisis, conflict, inequality, exclusion and technological transformation.

The Platform combines academic excellence with practical relevance and seeks to strengthen dialogue, cooperation and knowledge dissemination across different sectors and communities of practice.

The Geneva Human Rights Platform develops activities and initiatives relating to a broad range of contemporary human rights issues, including:

  • Implementation of international human rights law
  • Protection of persons belonging to minorities
  • Protection of vulnerable groups and persons in situations of risk
  • Human rights in situations of armed conflict and crisis
  • Business and human rights
  • Emerging technologies and human rights
  • Accountability and prevention of serious violations;
  • Human rights and multilateral policy processes.

The Platform promotes both thematic and cross-cutting engagement in collaboration with States, international organizations, academic institutions, research centres, civil society actors, and independent experts.

The Platform serves as a space for dialogue and collaboration between academic research and policy practice.

Its activities include:

  • Research and expert initiatives;
  • Conferences, seminars, and workshops;
  • Policy discussions and expert consultations;
  • Publications and legal analysis;
  • Podcasts, advocacy, and public engagement activities;
  • Digital and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

The Platform also contributes to broader cross-platform engagement within the Geneva Academy, particularly on issues relating to prevention, protection, accountability and non-recurrence.

Current and forthcoming initiatives include:

  • Human Rights Uncovered podcast series
  • Research and policy engagement activities on the Persons Belonging to Minorities
  • The forthcoming workshop on Persons Belonging to Minorities
  • The forthcoming 2026 Annual Conference of the Association of Human Rights Institutes (AHRI)
  • Expert discussions and policy dialogues on contemporary human rights challenges
  • Collaborative initiatives with international organisations, diplomats, researchers and civil society actors.

The Geneva Human Rights Platform also serves as a hub for specialized training and educational activities in the field of human rights.

These activities may include:

  • Executive education initiatives;
  • Tailored trainings;
  • Expert workshops;
  • Thematic short courses;
  • Learning activities developed in connection with the Geneva Academy’s broader educational programmes, including its Summer Intensive Courses.

Frontiers in International Human Rights Law

Online June – July 2026 (online sessions run 26 June – 7 July)
The course will aim at better understanding how international human rights law is evolving in response to contemporary global challenges, through the analysis of recent jurisprudence from UN bodies and regional human rights courts.

Human Rights and AI Systems

Online August & September 2026 (online sessions run 19 August to 16 September)
The course will aim at better understanding how AI systems threaten or promote human rights across diverse social groups and regulatory contexts.

Neurotechnologies: delivering innovation that protects and promotes human rights

Online August and September 2026 (online sessions run 20 August to 15 September)
The course will aim at better understanding the human rights implications of neurotechnology and the adequacy of existing legal frameworks to address them.

UN Protection Architecture in Action: R2P, Human Rights and Accountability

Online August and September 2026 (online sessions run 24 August to 2 September)
The course will aim at better understanding how R2P and the UN protection architecture respond — or fail to respond — to atrocity crises in practice.

Peacebuilding and Reconciliation

Online July 2026 (online sessions run 9 to 23 July)
The course will aim at better understanding how peacebuilding and reconciliation processes contribute to durable peace in contemporary conflict contexts.

The Platform aims to support knowledge exchange and capacity building among practitioners, policymakers, diplomats, researchers, and civil society actors working on contemporary human rights challenges.
