The Geneva Academy offers advanced training in international humanitarian law, human rights, and related fields, combining academic expertise with practical insight.
Participants can choose between open enrolment trainings, open to individual applicants, and tailor-made programmes developed in partnership with institutions, governments, and organisations to address specific needs and contexts.
The Geneva Academy has extensive experience in delivering training worldwide, both online and in person, for participants from international organisations, governments, NGOs, and academic institutions. Past trainings have addressed topics such as accountability for international crimes, the application of international humanitarian law in contemporary conflicts, and the protection of human rights in situations of crisis and transition.
The programme is coordinated by Dr Victoria Priori (Academic Coordinator), with the support of Lotte Walstra (Training Designer).
The Geneva Academy offers advanced, practice-oriented training opportunities in international humanitarian law, human rights, and related fields relevant to situations of armed conflict and transition, including questions of international responsibility for serious violations.
Building on the experience of the Training Hub of the Geneva Human Rights Platform, the Academy has expanded its training offer to reach a broader audience, including professionals, practitioners, and advanced students seeking to deepen their expertise through intensive, expert-led learning.
Our trainings are designed for participants who wish to strengthen their ability to understand, interpret, and apply international law in complex operational, legal, and policy environments.
Our trainings are open to participants from diverse professional and academic backgrounds, including:
- Professionals working in international organizations, governments, and non-governmental organizations
- Legal practitioners and policy experts
- Researchers and academics
- Advanced students and early-career professionals
They are particularly suited to those who:
- Work on issues related to human rights, international humanitarian law, or international criminal law
- Seek to strengthen their capacity to apply international norms in contexts of conflict, crisis, or transition
- Wish to update their knowledge or reorient their professional trajectory towards these fields
Our trainings combine academic rigour with practical relevance and are taught by a diverse team of academics, practitioners, and field experts.
They are interactive and participatory, encouraging reflection, dialogue, and peer learning. Sessions typically include live expert lectures, discussions, case studies, and guided self-learning activities in small groups, ensuring a high level of engagement.
Participants who complete a training receive a Certificate of Completion from the Geneva Academy.
Trainings are offered in intensive formats, typically over a few days or one week.
They are delivered online, allowing participants from around the world to attend without travel, or, when appropriate, in person in Geneva.
From autumn onwards, certain trainings will also be delivered through a digital platform and followed in a self-paced format, allowing participants to progress at their own pace.
The choice of format depends on pedagogical needs and the specific objectives of each training.
The Geneva Academy offers two complementary types of training:
- Professional Training Programme: a structured, in-depth programme delivered online or in person, and designed for individual participants seeking comprehensive training
- Tailor-made trainings: customised courses developed upon request for partner institutions, including international organizations, NGOs, and governments
Applications for forthcoming trainings can be submitted directly to the Geneva Academy. Interested candidates are invited to send a short CV and a brief expression of interest to: digital.academy@geneva-academy.ch
Information on course dates and application deadlines is published under each training announcement. For tailor-made trainings, institutions are encouraged to contact us directly to discuss their needs and develop a customised proposal.
