Exploring Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights Standard Setting at the United Nations Level

On 28 August 2026, the Oxford Institute for Ethics in AI, in collaboration with the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, hosted an informal consultation on standard setting at the United Nations level in relation to artificial intelligence and human rights.
This consultation brought together a small group of experts, practitioners, and stakeholders to reflect on the current state of play regarding AI and human rights at the UN and regional levels, to identify protection gaps in light of past standard-setting experiences, and to discuss the potential role of the UN human rights system in future standard setting on AI.
