Dr Nathalie Herlemont Appointed as New Executive Director of the Geneva Academy of IHL and Human Rights
The Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights is delighted to welcome Dr Nathalie Herlemont as its new Executive Director.
Dr Herlemont holds a PhD in political science, with a specialisation in international humanitarian law, certificates in International Criminal Law and Refugee law, and brings more than 25 years of experience across the humanitarian and academic sectors. She most recently served as Chief Analyst and, before that, Head of Programme at ACAPS in Geneva. Previously, she was Executive Director of the Handicap International Foundation and Head of Strategic Policy and Humanitarian Advocacy at Handicap International – Humanity and Inclusion.
Experienced in analyzing humanitarian issues and needs in conflict situations, she made regular support field visits to Albania, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Kenya, Mozambique, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Ivory Coast, DRC, DPRK, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Colombia, Ukraine amongst others.
Her strong connection with academia has run throughout her career: for nearly ten years, she taught at the Geneva Centre of Humanitarian Studies (formerly CERAH), as well as at several French universities, sharing her expertise in ethics, humanitarian law, actor and context analysis, and the protection of vulnerable groups.
As Executive Director, Dr Herlemont will work with the Academy’s co-presidents, representing our founding institutions: Professors Paola Gaeta and Frédéric Bernard. Together, they will lead the Academy and further strengthen its unique position at the intersection of education, research and policy engagement, building on its identity as a joint centre of the University of Geneva and the Geneva Graduate Institute.
