Summer intensive courses

The Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights offers intensive online courses designed for professionals, researchers, and postgraduate / advanced students.

These short, academically rigorous online programmes provide participants with the opportunity to deepen their expertise in international humanitarian law and human rights through focused and rigorous learning. Delivered in small, highly select groups, each course ensures close interaction with experts and meaningful engagement with peers. Combining flexibility with academic excellence, the courses are tailored to fit alongside full-time professional commitments and respond to the evolving needs of the humanitarian and legal sectors.

Armed Non-State Actors and International Law

Online June – July 2026 (online sessions run 26 June – 7 July)
The course will aim at better understanding the role and regulation of Armed Non-State Actors (ANSA) in contemporary armed conflicts.

Frontiers in International Human Rights Law

Online June – July 2026 (online sessions run 26 June – 7 July)
The course will aim at better understanding how international human rights law is evolving in response to contemporary global challenges, through the analysis of recent jurisprudence from UN bodies and regional human rights courts.

Weapons Law Fundamentals

Online July 2026 (online sessions run 7 – 17 July)
The course will aim at better understanding the legal frameworks governing weapons use, regulation, and transfers under international law.

Peacebuilding and Reconciliation

Online July 2026 (online sessions run 9 to 23 July)
The course will aim at better understanding how peacebuilding and reconciliation processes contribute to durable peace in contemporary conflict contexts.

Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals in Armed Conflicts

Online July 2026 (online sessions run 13 to 22 July)
The course will aim at better understanding the legal framework protecting journalists in armed conflict and the challenges to its effective implementation.

Emerging Actors and Patterns in Cultural Property Protection during Armed Conflict

Online July and August 2026 (online sessions run 15 July to 5 August)
The course will aim at better understanding the legal frameworks and mechanisms protecting cultural property from the threats of armed conflict.

Introduction to the Islamic Law of Armed Conflict

Online July and August 2026 (online sessions run 29 July to 26 August)
The course will aim at better understanding the Islamic law of armed conflict and its relationship to contemporary conflicts and international humanitarian law.

Transitional Justice and Structural Violence: Making Connections

Online August 2026 (online sessions run 17 – 26 August)
The course will aim at better understanding how transitional justice can advance socioeconomic rights and transformative justice in post-conflict and post-authoritarian settings.

Human Rights and AI Systems

Online August & September 2026 (online sessions run 19 August to 16 September)
The course will aim at better understanding how AI systems threaten or promote human rights across diverse social groups and regulatory contexts.

Neurotechnologies: delivering innovation that protects and promotes human rights

Online August and September 2026 (online sessions run 20 August to 15 September)
The course will aim at better understanding the human rights implications of neurotechnology and the adequacy of existing legal frameworks to address them.

UN Protection Architecture in Action: R2P, Human Rights and Accountability

Online August and September 2026 (online sessions run 24 August to 2 September)
The course will aim at better understanding how R2P and the UN protection architecture respond — or fail to respond — to atrocity crises in practice.

Contemporary Challenges to the Classification of Armed Conflicts

Online August and September 2026 (online sessions run 31 August to 9 September)
The course will aim at better understanding the legal classification of armed conflicts and its practical implications under international humanitarian law.

Each summer intensive course represents a total workload of 75 hours.

  • The 15 hours of live online teaching are divided in 8 sessions (1-hour introductory session and 7 interactive sessions of 2 hours each).
  • The 60 hours of individual work include preparation for sessions, readings and assignments and preparation for the final assessment.

Class size

Courses are intentionally limited to a maximum of 25 participants, ensuring a niche, interactive, and high-quality learning environment with direct access to instructors.

Schedule

Live sessions take place online from 12:00 to 14:00 (CET), making them accessible during lunch breaks and compatible with multiple time zones. Sessions will not be recorded.

Assessment

Evaluation is composed of class participation and oral evaluation.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a certificate issued by the Geneva Academy.

Fee

CHF 950 per course.

A discount of CHF 100 is available for students and alumni of the Academy, UNIGE, IHEID, and individuals who have previously participated in our trainings or educational activities.

Selected applicants will receive a confirmation of acceptance.

To secure their place, accepted participants are required to pay a non-refundable deposit of CHF 100.

Please note that each course is subject to a minimum of 10 participants. If this minimum is not reached two weeks prior to the start date, the course will not be delivered and all registered participants will receive a full refund of the deposit.

Places are strictly limited to 25 participants per course, and early application is strongly encouraged.
