In-person training: Advanced Weapons Law

10-13 June 2026, Geneva

An in-person training on Advanced Weapons Law, led by Professor Stuart Casey-Maslen, will take place from 10 to 13 June 2026 at the Villa Moynier in Geneva, offering a focused exploration of the legal frameworks governing weapons in peacetime and armed conflict.

A flyer for the event can be found here.

This training will be a deep dive into international weapons law. Over four full days, it will address in detail the following:

  • Police use of force and maritime law enforcement, including counterpiracy and counternarcotic operations, under international human rights law and the law of the sea
  • Use of means of warfare in armed conflict under international humanitarian law, including the definition of an indiscriminate weapon and attack and a weapon of a nature to cause superfluous injury and unnecessary suffering
  • Disarmament law, in particular the Chemical Weapons Convention, the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, and the Convention on Cluster Munitions
  • The legality of weapons transfers, in particular under the Arms Trade Treaty.

Presentation of the material will be in-person in an interactive manner, with real-world and fictitious case studies a common feature.

Participants are required to have international law experience but do not need to possess technical knowledge of weaponry. By the end of the training, it is expected that they will have a detailed understanding of the intricacies of weapons law applicable during peacetime and in armed conflict and a clear understanding of key terms (and the ambiguities that exist in certain cases).

The facilitator has more than thirty years of experience in international weapons law. He possesses a doctorate addressing the law pertaining to landmines and a master’s degree in forensic ballistics.
