Luc Thévenoz

Luc Thévenoz is a full professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva and director of its Centre for Banking and Financial Law . His research and teaching focus on the law of obligations (and in particular contracts), banking law, financial markets and services law, as well as the law of trusts and fiduciary arrangements.

From 2008 to 2015, Luc Thévenoz chaired the Swiss Public Takeover Board, the market supervisory authority for public takeover bids in Switzerland. Previously, he was a member of the Swiss Federal Banking Commission (2001-2007) and the International Arbitration Tribunal for Dormant Accounts in Switzerland (1997-2001). He contributed to various legislative and regulatory projects, particularly in the areas of intermediated securities, trusts, takeover bids, and unclaimed assets. He negotiated the Geneva/Unidroit Convention on Substantive Rules Relating to Intermediated Securities for Switzerland ; he was a member of the drafting committee and co-editor of its official commentary. His 2001 report on trusts laid the groundwork for Switzerland’s ratification of the Hague Convention on Trusts.

Luc Thévenoz is very active in continuing education. In 2003, he created and then directed the Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Compliance Management , which is taught in Geneva and Lugano. Since 2014, he has been a member of the steering committee of the CAS in Financial Regulation at the Universities of Geneva and Bern. Every year, he co-organizes the Banking and Financial Law Day, which brings together 350 practitioners.

Luc Thévenoz holds a doctorate in law from the University of Geneva and is a member of the Bar. He was appointed full professor in 1993 and teaches regularly at the University of Luxembourg. His academic career includes positions as a visiting professor or researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, Boston University, and Duke Law School.

Luc Thévenoz is a member of the editorial board of the Swiss Business Law Review and Trust Law International. In November 2007, the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners awarded him honorary membership in recognition of his contributions to the legal recognition of trusts in civil law jurisdictions and to Switzerland’s ratification of the Hague Convention. Luc Thévenoz also serves on the board of directors of Banque Mirabaud & Cie SA.
