Andrew Clapham is a Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute, which he joined in 1997, an Honorary Member of the International Commission of Jurists, and an Academic Associate Member of Matrix Chambers. He was a member of the United Nations (UN) Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan from September 2017 to March 2023. Professor Clapham was also the first Director of the Geneva Academy (2006–2014).

His current research focuses on the concept of war and he published a book with that title in 2021. Before teaching at the Graduate Institute, Professor Clapham was the Representative of Amnesty International at the UN in New York. Since joining the Graduate Institute he has also worked as Special Adviser on Corporate Responsibility to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson, and Adviser on International Humanitarian Law to Sergio Vieira de Mello, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Iraq.
