Geneva Academy Talk – Professor Gilles Carbonnier: Dealing with Humanitarian Dilemmas

Thursday 30 April 2026, 18:30-20:30

Humanitarian action currently faces enormous challenges in an increasingly polarised world. As armed conflicts multiply, we witness additional restrictions imposed on humanitarian access and funding while humanitarian personnel have been targeted with greater frequency, both physically and digitally. At the same time, the rapid technological advances on the battlefield raise new questions about the application of existing legal frameworks.

In this context, Professor Gilles Carbonnier, drawing upon his extensive experience and research in the field as well as his two terms as Vice-President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), reflects on current humanitarian dilemmas in conversation with the Geneva Academy’s Executive Director, Professor Cécile Aptel
