LLM in IHL and Human Rights: What our Students Say

9 January 2024

Arianna Pia Mazzariello is enrolled in our LLM in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights. In this interview, she tells about her background, the programme and what it will bring to her career.

About me

I hold a master's degree in law with a specialization in international law. My final paper explored the intersection of torture as a crime against humanity and sexualized torture. This research has fuelled my strong commitment to addressing and preventing sexual and gender-based crimes, actively contributing to the fight against impunity for such offences and promoting gender equality in international law.

Why did you choose the LLM at the Geneva Academy?

The LLM programme at the Geneva Academy stood out to me due to its cutting-edge teaching method, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills, offering engaging optional courses, and great internship opportunities. Moreover, its location at the heart of international governance provides an exceptional platform for those aspiring to make a real impact in the dynamic landscape of international law.

What are you particularly enjoying about this programme?

I particularly enjoy the interactive and interdisciplinary nature of the programme. The small class sizes allow for meaningful discussions, and the exposure to real-world cases and practitioners enhances the practical relevance of the coursework.

Would you recommend it?

I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking a comprehensive and enriching experience in international law. The faculty's expertise, the programme's strong focus on practical skills development, and the exposure to Geneva's rich international legal community make it an invaluable experience for anyone passionate about making a meaningful impact in the field of international law.

What are you planning to do next?

Upon completing the LLM programme, I plan to pursue a career in international law and human rights advocacy. The strong network and practical insights gained from the Geneva Academy will be crucial in working with international organizations or NGOs, allowing me to contribute effectively to the promotion and protection of human rights on a global scale.

Why did you choose to be photographed on the balcony of Villa Moynier?

I chose to be photographed on the balcony of Villa Monier, outside the Cassese Room, because it represents the heart of the Geneva Academy's LLM programme. This location not only holds historical significance as the site where the four Geneva Conventions were signed but also serves as a tribute to Antonio Cassese, a notable figure in international law and a source of personal inspiration for me.
